Corville were proud hosts today of the regional final of ‘An Comórtas Fichille’ chess competition. We qualified from the Féile Fichille round in Portarlington a few weeks ago and were making our debut in the regional finals. Understandably, there was great excitement throughout the school as we were visited by 7 other teams from Tipp and nearby counties. There were 112 students crammed into our hall for the day with two competitions taking place – a ‘Buds’ competition for 3rd/4th class and a ‘Masters’ competition for 5th/6th class. We qualified two Masters team and one Buds team and all our teams did very well.

There were six games to play for each student and each game lasted 20 minutes. Jamie from 6th Class led by example by winning all 6 of his games and was the top scorer in the Masters tournament. He along with Gabriel, Corey, Jacob, Noah, Aaron, Craig and Dylan formed the ‘Corville Kings’ team and they took home the team gold medals with a fantastic victory. This result is huge for the school and reflects the hard work being done each week with the students in Chess Club. Our ‘Corville Knights’ team of Donnacha, Bobby, Nathan, Jack, Conor, Jack, Kailum and Thomas scored highly too and finished in 7th place. We also had super news in the Buds competition with our ‘Corville Checkmates’ team of Patrik, Kyle, Cian, Emile, John, Tadhg, Lukas, Aoife and Cian. They performed superbly and took home the silver medals from the event. We are extremely proud of all of you. Thanks for making some new Corville Memories that will last a life-time.

That was the last chess competition of the year so Thursday’s Chess Club will be going into hibernation until September.
