Peer tutoring.
5th and 6th class pupils participated in a structured reading programme called “peer tutoring”. It involved pairs of pupils working co-operatively, at an appropriate level and following certain procedures. First to commencement, Mr Hogan and Mrs Atkinson prepared the children for the programme by modelling the procedures the pupils were to follow during the sessions. That got a few giggles as Mr Hogan modelled the naughty child occasions!! The aims of the programme were to develop:
-Reading accuracy and fluency
-Reading comprehension.
-Ability to question.
-Vocabulary
-Dictionary work.
-Social skills.
The pupils themselves came up with the name “Read With Speed” for the sessions. A very worthwhile project for both teachers and pupils. Well done to all involved!!!!!

Reading recovery.
The Reading Recovery Programme is currently being implemented in the school. The Reading Recovery teacher receives specialist training to give supplementary teaching to children who, after one year at school, are not progressing with reading/writing. The teacher develops an individual programme for each of the four selected children. Each pupil receives a daily one-to-one lesson for a period of 15-20 week. Each lesson incorporates reading and writing tasks which allow the child to successfully develop their literacy skills.
