Last Thursday, saw the launch of our Active School 2016 programme. It was a great day for the school with all our kids taking part in a range of activities throughout the school day. It was terrific to see so many parents getting involved in the activities too. We were also delighted to have Tipp Fm in the school to help promote our Active School message. We couldn’t have gotten things off to a better start so now we just have to keep on moving.
So what activities were there?
The day started off with ‘run/walk a mile for Corville’ in the school field. Tipperary hurler, Barry Heffernan, cut the ribbon to launch the day and off everyone went. Luckily for us, the weather was perfect and with the music pumping we were all super motivated. After 4 laps, the mile mark was reached but many people pushed on ahead and were soon targeting mile 3! Our infant classes got involved too with their teachers and parents. They walked around the basketball courts. Nice going everyone.
After this, we focused on dancing, cycling, circuit training and fun relays! The infant classes were focusing on Zumba for the morning and the rest of the school were allotted times to come down to the hall for cycling and circuit training. Mr. Scully was roped into cycling the full 4 hours on a bike accompanied by students, teachers and parents at different times. The aim was to cycle the full length of the county and with 84 miles on the clock at the end, this target was hit. There were also relay races taking place in the basketball courts. The middle classes had great fun taking part in the various different fun races we had organised.
After lunch, it was time for the student / teacher basketball matches. These contests are always hotly contested with the girls and boys from 6th class keen to earn bragging rights. There were two matches, with the 6th class girls taking on the female teachers and the 6th class boys taking on the male teachers. Both matches were very tight and great skill and sportsmanship was being shown. These matches were a great way to end what was a tiring but highly enjoyable day.
The school are very grateful for the hard work put in by the Active Flag committee and all the staff. A lot of work was put into this event and the joy on the children’s faces at the end of the day showed that it was a big success.
Remember, this is not the end, it is just the beginning of what will be a very active year at Corville. Keep an eye and ear open for details of all future events.
To keep up to date with all things ‘Active’ in the school, we have created a Facebook page. Make sure to visit and like this page. We have loads more photos from the day for you to look at over there.
